Portara and Chora: Guided Walk or Explore Naxos Town Alone?

Updated October 16, 2026 · 7 min read

The marble Portara framing an orange sunset above the harbour and white houses of Chora

The answer first. Explore Chora alone if you mainly want the harbour, Kastro lanes and sunset at Portara. They form a compact walking area, and the official Naxos tourism site says Portara is reached on foot from Chora by a paved footpath. Book the wine and mythology sunset tour if the stories behind the streets, Apollo, Ariadne and Dionysus matter more than setting your own pace.

What you can do without a guide

Start at the harbour and turn into the old town rather than walking only along the waterfront. Chora grew around the medieval Kastro; whitewashed houses, stone mansions, arches and narrow lanes climb towards it. The official town history identifies Trani Porta, the Catholic cathedral and buildings linked with the Ursulines and Jesuits among the surviving layers.

Then return towards the water and cross to Palatia for Portara. The huge marble doorway is the remaining monumental element of an unfinished sixth-century BC temple. It is not an isolated viewpoint placed there for photographs: foundations around it reveal the intended scale of the sanctuary, and Palatia also carries the island’s Ariadne and Dionysus tradition.

This independent route costs nothing, needs no reservation and can expand or shrink around heat and crowds. It is the right answer for photographers, repeat visitors and anybody who enjoys getting mildly lost in old lanes.

What a guide adds

The three-hour wine and mythology tour links the old town with sunset at the Temple of Apollo and a local wine tasting. It begins at €76 and is rated 4.8 from 245 reviews. Its value lies in interpretation: a doorway, coat of arms or place-name becomes part of a connected account rather than another attractive object.

The tour also solves timing. A guide controls the progression through Chora so the group reaches Portara for the sunset portion. That is useful in the maze of lanes, but it removes the freedom to stop for an unplanned meal or spend half an hour composing one photograph.

Wine is part of the proposition, so this is poor value for someone uninterested in tasting unless the operator offers a suitable alternative. Likewise, visitors who want archaeology in depth should check how the three hours divide between mythology, town walking, sunset and wine.

Sunset changes the choice

Portara is famous at sunset and therefore busiest then. Going independently lets you arrive earlier, stay later or return in the morning for quieter views. A guided sunset walk gives the moment narrative structure but cannot create solitude. If crowds bother you, see Portara in daylight and use the evening for the Kastro lanes.

The footpath and old-town paving also deserve practical attention. Confirm accessibility directly if steps, uneven stone or boarding-style gradients are a concern; a general description such as “walkable” is not an accessibility guarantee.

A sensible independent circuit

Allow time for the harbour, Burgo lanes, Kastro and Portara rather than drawing the shortest line between two landmarks. Carry water in hot weather and wear footwear that handles polished or uneven stone. Do not promise yourself every museum and church in one sweep: opening hours can determine the route more than distance does.

Our recommendation

First-time visitors who enjoy history should take the wine and mythology sunset tour, then revisit independently if time allows. If you want atmosphere and photographs rather than interpretation, Chora and Portara are straightforward to explore on your own.
