Mount Zas: Is the Guided Hike to the Cyclades’ Highest Summit Worth It?
Updated October 16, 2026 · 6 min read
The answer first. The guided hike to the summit of Mount Zas is worth considering if route finding, transport or walking alone on exposed ground worries you. It starts at €85. Confident hikers can go independently, but should not mistake the island’s highest summit for a casual beach walk.
What makes Zas different
At 1,003 metres, Mount Zas is the highest point in the Cyclades. Naxos’s official hiking route begins near Filoti and passes Agia Marina, the Levgasa spring and an ancient inscription before reaching the summit. Near the summit the trail gives way to jagged limestone, and the official description says the descent can be rugged and hard to navigate.
That last detail is the real case for a guide. The value is not a theatrical story at the summit, but choosing the line through rocky terrain, reading conditions and keeping the day coherent. The mountain also carries the island’s Zeus tradition, while the cave below has archaeological importance.
Who should book the guide
Choose the guided option when this is your first hike on a dry Cycladic mountain, when you are travelling alone, or when you do not have transport to a suitable trailhead. Ask the operator which route, distance, ascent and transfer are included before paying: a summit outing and a cave walk are not automatically the same itinerary.
Go independently only if you are comfortable navigating mountain paths and turning back when wind, heat or visibility changes. Start early in hot weather, carry water, wear footwear suitable for loose rock and do not rely on shade. Check the forecast locally; the Aegean view is not compensation for forcing a summit in poor conditions.
When this is the wrong tour
Skip it if you want an easy mythology walk, have uncertain footing or mainly want to see Zas Cave. The summit route has exposed, uneven ground, while the cave is a separate objective lower on the mountain. A village day around Filoti may be the better use of time for anyone who dislikes sustained ascent.
Verdict
For capable, self-sufficient walkers, the €85 price buys convenience and local route judgement rather than access to a restricted place. For less experienced visitors, that is precisely the useful part. Confirm the current meeting point, equipment, route and cancellation conditions on the booking page before setting out.
